What Exactly is the Carnivore diet?

There has been a huge amount of people recently participating in the “carnivore diet”. What exactly is this, you might ask. Well, this is a radical turn in nutrition where people exclusively consume animal based products— primarily meat, eggs, and fish. Complete carnivores have also been cutting out fruits, vegetables, and every type of sugar.

A Typical Day as a Carnivore:

Breakfast: Pasture raised eggs, juicy ribeye steak

Snack: Beef jerky stick

Beverage: Glass of raw milk

Lunch: Bowl of ground beef topped with mineral salt, cooked in grass fed butter

Beverage: Warm bone broth

Snack: Pork rinds and hard boiled eggs

Dinner: Lamb chops or another juicy ribeye, slathered in grass fed butter

Dessert: Raw milk ice cream, drizzled with olive oil

But why eliminate fruits and vegetables?

  • Eliminating fruits and vegetables drastically reduces carb intake, which is the main reason people jump on this trend. Others argue that the plant-based food contains “anti-nutrients” which can often cause inflammation and digestive issues. By avoiding fruits and vegetables, people believe that they can improve their overall gut health and nutrient absorption.

Benefits:

1) Weight Loss:

One of the most talked about benefits of this diet is weight loss. By eliminating carbohydrates, the body enters a state of ketosis, which means it burns fat for fuel instead of glucose (sugar). This can lead to significant weight reduction, especially for those who have struggled with other diets. Of course you have to factor in lifestyle and exercise, but ultimately when you cut out sugar and unhealthy carbs, your body will perform at a much higher rate.

2) Improved Mental Clarity

The theory with improved mental clarity on this diet is that blood sugar levels are more stable, which essentially prevent energy crashes and brain fog that often comes with fluctuating blood sugar levels.

3)Reduced Inflammation

Many individuals who participate in this diet claim they experience reduced inflammation. Animal products are rich in a nutrient called omega-3 which have anti-inflammatory properties.

Potential risk- Nutrient deficiencies

One major concern for excluding all plant-based food is that you are excluding the source of several vitamins and minerals. Over time this can lead to some health issues such as a weakened immune system so it is recommended that you take over the counter supplements.

The Gradual Transition

Switching your complete diet abruptly can be challenging. Starting with a gradual transition, like a reduction in sugar and increase in protein can help your body adjust more smoothly.

Listening to Your Body

Everybody responds differently to diets. If you experience any negative symptoms to this new diet, it may not be suitable for you.

The carnivore diet is a controversial yet intriguing approach to nutrition. As with any diet, it is essential to do throughout research before hand. Ultimately, finding a balanced and sustainable way of eating that supports your overall health and well-being should be the primary goal.

Unfortunately, with the carnivore diet you are going to have to resist the urge to eat our soaps even harder (we add coconut and olive oil to our recipe), but do not fret, you can still use them the way they are intended to.

Now that you know how to successfully participate in the carnivore diet, would you try it?
