GUT-SKIN AXIS EXPLAINED
The skin is the body's largest organ, and is one of the major pathways for the body to expel toxins and waste. Therefore, the skin is a valuable indicator of gut health. When gut bacteria is out of balance, it can appear outwardly through inflammation, acne, rosacea, and eczema. This link between the gut and skin health is referred to as the 'gut-skin axis.'
UNDERSTANDING DYSBIOSIS
Any imbalance of the gut microbiome is referred to as 'dysbiosis.' The gut microbiota maintains cell proliferation, lipid metabolism, and other metabolic functions. Signaling pathways within the cells contribute to these functions; however when dysbiosis occurs, those pathways trigger inflammation. The balance within the microbiome is largely related to diet.
FOODS TO AVOID FOR A HEALTHY GUT
Corn & Soy
Corn and soy (and their derivatives) are common ingredients in packaged food. The problem with corn and soy is in the US over 90% of it is GMO and is full of glyphosate (RoundUp) which leads to dysbiosis, then leaky gut, as well as inflammation.
Conventional Eggs
When chickens are fed GMO corn and soy, you're consuming GMO corn and soy. Opt for pasture-raised organic eggs when possible.
Refined Sugar
Refined sugar, corn syrup, artificial sweeteners (even natural ones like stevia) can be bad news for your gut. Excessive sugar consumption feeds the bad gut bacteria, causes dysbiosis, and leads to yeast overgrowth (like Candida).
Lectins and phytates
Lectins are 'anti-nutrients' found in gluten-containing grains (like oats), beans, nightshades, and corn. If you do consume these foods, soak them overnight or add something acidic like lemon juice or apple cider vinegar. Phytates are also anti-nutrients, as they interfere with the absorption of key minerals your body needs.
Seed Oils
Heavily refined oils like vegetable, canola, soybean, etc. are highly inflammatory and wreak havoc on your gut health, leading to dysbiosis and leaky gut.
Nightshades
Nightshades are plants such as bell peppers, tomatoes, and potatoes. These foods contain alkaloids which protects them from insects and can be toxic to humans in large amounts. Cooking helps to reduce the alkaloid content by 40 to 50%.
FOODS TO ENJOY FOR A HEALTHY GUT
Probiotics
Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, organic sourdough, apple cider vinegar
Healthy Fats
Grass-fed beef, pasture-raised eggs, organic avocados, wild-caught salmon, organic cold-pressed coconut and olive oils
Bone Broth
Bone broth is full of glycine, which helps to reduce inflammation and repair the lining of your gut. It also contains gelatin, which helps with digestion. Bone broth is rich in the amino acids glutamine and proline which work as the primary fuel source for the cells within the gut. Bone broth also has electrolytes and deeply hydrates you, which is vital to gut health.
STOP SUFFERING, START HEALING
If you're suffering from constant breakouts, inflamed skin, or skin issues like rosacea, hives, or eczema, you may also be suffering from an unbalanced gut microbiome. The good news is, your gut microbiome is constantly communicating with you to alert you of an imbalance. When expensive products aren't helping your skin troubles, try eliminating the foods mentioned on earlier slides and increase your intake of probiotics, healthy fats, and bone broth. Also work on getting daily sun exposure and movement.
USE HEALTHY SKINCARE
Skincare companies do not want you to know that you can heal your skin through lifestyle and dietary changes. That would mean they stop making money by selling you their toxic products to 'heal' your skin issues. To help your skin thrive, opt for the most natural skincare available.
